A thermal camera can watch the temperature of the whole engine, not just the one spot a temperature sender measures. In this video I connect a FLIR AX8 camera to my Raymarine network to monitor my Detroit Diesel 4-71. I set areas of interest on the engine and alarms that warn me if any of them gets too hot.
